Priest and Martyr, Father Damien de Veuster, Apostle of the Lepers (1840-1889)

This Belgian missionary had labored in Hawaii for ten years, loved by his people. Then the extreme physical and moral misery of the poor lepers relegated forever to the Island of Molokai prompted Father Damien to perform a heroic act of charity: he exiled himself with them, becoming their father, shepherd and fellow leper; he died of the painful, disfiguring disease. The life of this Christian hero will leave no one indifferent.
