OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

Mexico December 9-12, 1531

The Blessed Virgin looked down upon an Indian called Juan Diego and chose him as Her representative to the Bishop of Mexico. She requested the construction of a church in Her honor, but the bishop demanded a sign. Juan gathered some flowers upon orders from Heaven. "Carry these roses from Me to the bishop," the Virgin Mary told him. "That is the sure sign of My will. Let them not delay in building a church here in My honor." Juan went to see the bishop and let the flowers fall at his feet. Wonder of wonders! An image of the Queen of Heaven appeared on the Indians cloak. The bishop bowed, filled with respect, and had the basilica built. During the eight years following this apparition, 9 million Indians in Mexico were converted to the Faith; and the image of Mary, miraculously imprinted on Juan Diegos cloak, has been preserved for the last 470 years.
