Saint Nicholas, Patron and Protector of Switzerland
This great Saint is a burning torch. Five centuries after his death, he is still giving light to his countrymen and to the entire Church. His life reminds us that holiness can be pursued in every vocation. Nicholas of Flue was a farmer, soldier and magistrate, the father of a large family, and then a hermit for the last twenty years of his life. He lived exclusively on the Holy Eucharist for many years, incapable of eating any material food.
(1417-1487) This great Saint is a burning torch. Five centuries after his death, he is still giving light to his countrymen and to the entire Church. His life reminds us that holiness can be pursued in every vocation. Nicholas of Flue was a farmer, soldier and magistrate, a model husband and father, and then a hermit for the last twenty years of his life, during which years he lived exclusively on the Holy Eucharist. This outstanding figure in Swiss history became famed for his holiness and wisdom and was consulted by a constant stream of leaders and common folk from all walks of life.
Nicholas' usual prayer reflects his whole interior life and the ascension of his soul towards holiness: Lord, take me from all that distances me from You. Lord, grant me all that leads me to You. Lord, take me from myself and give me completely to You.
