Saint Catherine of Genoa's Treatise on Purgatory has always been greatly admired for its loftiness and the reliability of its doctrine. The Saint dictated it according to what she had learned in her visions, but even more according to the experience of her own spiritual life. To express the sufferings of the souls in purgatory, Catherine attempted to convey the violence of the love of God in her heart, along with her desire for perfect purity. Few writings make us understand more clearly what purgatory consists in, or give us a more exact idea of the infinite holiness of God.
