OUR LADY OF THE CAPE

CAP DE LA MADELEINE, Quebec 1888

In March of 1879, Father Luc Desilets desired a miraculous bridge of ice over the St. Lawrence River in order to transport some stone from the south to the north bank, to be used in constructing a new church. To this purpose he made a vow to consecrate the old church built in 1714 to the Queen of the Holy Rosary. He obtained his bridge of ice (called the Rosary Bridge) and solemnly consecrated the little church on June 22, 1888, placing a statue of the Virgin on the main altar. The Blessed Virgin showed Her gratitude around 7 o’clock that evening. In the presence of Father Desilets, Blessed Father Frederick of Ghyvelde and an elderly man, the statue came to life: the Virgin opened Her eyes and looked straight ahead into the distance. This prodigy lasted from 5 to 10 minutes. Since that time, many miracles and cures have attested to Our Lady of the Cape’s love for Her children.
